For many years, several of our Catholic churches provided monthly meals at the Salvation Army soup kitchen in Bangor or at the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter. Each group had one or two individuals who planned the meals along with others who helped shop, prepare meals, serve, and clean up.
With the onset of Covid, everything shut down. After a few months, several parishioners coordinated making sandwiches or bag lunches from their own homes and delivering them to the Salvation Army to be served from their mobile disaster unit. Eventually a take-out window was installed at the Salvation Army, making it safe for staff and volunteers to return to preparing the meals in the Salvation Army kitchen.
Currently, some of our group have returned to cook at the soup kitchen while others are still preparing food at their homes and delivering it to the Salvation Army.
This group of volunteers provides a home-cooked meal each Thursday for the homeless young adults at Mason Place, a program of Shaw House in Bangor. Each cook, in rotation, is assigned a Thursday and that cook provides a meal for 8 persons and delivers it to the program by late afternoon in time for supper. Cooks prepare the meal in their own kitchens, at home, and then deliver to Mason Place. We welcome new cooks and a calendar is mailed to all cooks, so they know when it is their turn. As a cook, your turn comes up at about every 12 weeks.
Catholic Charities supports our parish to have this program for seniors in need. SEARCH means Seeking Elders Alone, Renewing Courage and Hope. Our goal is to help people remain in their own homes as long as possible.
We recruit volunteers and match them with a senior. While new to the Greater Bangor area, we have already had some great feedback on how valuable our volunteers are to elders who are needing a visitor, help with groceries, or getting to appointments.
Additional volunteers are needed, as we have elders ready and waiting for help. All volunteers are offered training and are screened for the safety of everyone involved. Please consider joining our growing cadre of volunteers who truly make a difference to neighbors in need.
Our office is at St Michael Center in Brewer near St Teresa Church.
